Each website has a unique name or “address” that identifies its location. Typically, a web page address or URL is made up of the name of the server followed by the path to the file on that server. When you use a webhost, you are renting a piece of their server's space. If you don't want the webhost's server name to appear in your webpage's URL, then you can register your own customized domain name (costs approx. $10/year).
Domain names must be registered with a certified registrar in order to be valid and useable on the internet and to prevent others from registering the same name.
Having your own domain name makes your URL/address easier to remember, easier to type, and therefore easier to visit.
Another advantage to having your own domain name is that even if you switch to a different webhost, your website URL will stay the same!
Some webhosts include domain name registration in their webhosting fees.
